Garage door repair
When a garage door is stuck, noisy or crooked, the cause is usually one of a few parts. Here’s what technicians commonly fix.
Local help line coming soon. Until it opens: don’t try to open a door with a broken spring, keep kids and pets clear, unplug the opener, and don’t touch the springs or cables yourself.
Common repairs
- Springs that have broken or worn out. See broken springs.
- Cables that have frayed, snapped or come off the drum.
- Rollers and hinges that are worn, noisy or cracked.
- Doors off track after a car bumps the door or a part fails.
- Openers and sensors. See opener repair.
- Damaged panels that can sometimes be replaced one at a time.
Stay safe
- Don’t keep pressing the opener button if the door is stuck or crooked.
- Keep people, kids and pets away from a door that is off track or has a broken spring.
- Don’t try to adjust or remove springs or cables yourself. They are under high tension.
- If your car is stuck inside, tell the company right away.
- Take a photo of the problem to show the technician.
What to ask the company
- When can you come out?
- What will the repair cost before you start?
- Do the parts and labor come with a warranty?
- Are you insured?
